As parents and caregivers, we can empower our children to have healthy and peaceful relationships with their bodies and develop competent eating attitudes, even when we may still struggle with these things ourselves. This workshop will acknowledge the specific challenges we face parenting within a culture that promotes body hatred and extreme diets, while also highlighting opportunities to develop resilient, media literate, and body positive kids and teens.
We will identify risk and protective factors related to disordered eating in adolescents and review red flags that may indicate a child needs additional support and/or medical evaluation. We will briefly discuss the intersection of eating disorders and negative body image with other mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.
As a community, we will also learn about and process the ways in which living through the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted family feeding dynamics and contributed to noticeable increases in disordered eating during 2020.
