Please join us on Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m. for the final event in this year’s Ellen Small Speaker Series. Parent Coach and best-selling author, Dawn Huebner, PhD, will lead a webinar entitled “The Worry Paradox: The more you fight it, the more it holds on” during which she will equip parents with effective ways to approach anxiety in children from early elementary to middle school grades. An overview of the presentation is provided below. We invite you to submit questions for the speaker in advance.

A Zoom link will be sent the morning of the event.
worry (lower case) has a way of becoming Worry (upper case) in the blink of an eye. It’s what happens when feeling uneasy around bees turns into the refusal to go outside, or concern about getting sick morphs into carrying a bucket everywhere. This kind of Worry gets big, fast. And it’s hugely uncomfortable. No wonder we want to get rid of it! Unfortunately, the more we try to push Worry away — the more we accommodate, placate, explain, reassure — the more it holds on. That’s the Worry Paradox, that the things we do to relieve anxiety actually lock it in place. But there’s hope. In this talk, you will learn to think about anxiety in a different way. To talk about it differently, too. You will learn to support your anxious child without inadvertently reinforcing their anxiety, and will leave with an understanding of key skills that will help your child break free.
