STEAM Focus and Gaming Program Descriptions

art games
AGES: 9-15
DATES: JUNE 24-JULY 5
PRICE: $900 PER 2-WEEK CAMP

One of the most exciting ways to make visual art is through games. A lot of thoughtful artwork begins as playful experiments. In this camp, we will explore the use of games, chance, and play to generate original art. During week one, students will explore different ways of creating art through play and games. During week two, students will make more individual projects based on their personal interests. On the final day, we will display our work and have an art show for friends and family to attend. While investigating the theme of play, participants will use a range of materials and develop skills in drawing, painting, and sculpture. Open to anyone who wants to have fun making art!

Breaks for lunch and free swim are included each day along with time to explore Park School’s beautiful 100-acre campus and experience the Appalachian Challenge Course.

coding kidz: introduction to coding and programming
AGES: 11-15
DATES: JUNE 24-JULY 5
PRICE: $900 PER 2-WEEK CAMP

In this session, campers will be introduced to fundamental concepts of coding through such platforms as: MIT’s Scratch, Tynker, and Python (platform based on enrollees experience). These environments offer exciting ways to break into the world of coding, develop skills, meet new friends with similar interests, and look ahead to careers of creativity. Absolute beginners and intermediate skill levels welcome! Campers will learn to read and use source code, variables, loops, and functions. They will explore computational thinking, write games, and program music. Individual computers are provided.

Breaks for lunch and free swim are included each day.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING
AGES: 10-16

Calling all Magic Mage’s. Do you revel in casting spells? Summoning an army or countering your opponent’s moves? Come join our legions of Magic players and learn to play on the next level. Each day, campers will spend four hours in clinic learning, participating in open play, and enjoying the thrill of battle with friends. Week 1 is a review and analysis of color characteristics, introduction to common mechanics, basic game play, and beginning strategy.

Breaks for lunch and free swim are included each day along with time to explore Park School’s beautiful 100-acre campus and experience the Appalachian Challenge Course. The week will end with a Standard format tournament where players draft and construct decks of their own.

mindfulness and yoga
AGES: 6-9
DATES: JULY 1-JULY 5
PRICE: $450 PER 1-WEEK CAMP

Mindfulness and Yoga camp is a chance for your child to spend a week learning new ways to deal with life’s daily stressors by becoming more in tune with their minds and bodies in a safe and nurturing environment.

We will use nature and yoga to stretch our bodies and renew our way of looking at the world around us. Children will learn fun ways to self-soothe, self-regulate, re-energize, and be more in the moment. Possible activities include:

Collecting materials from the woods to create both temporary and permanent art.
Choosing a peaceful outdoor setting to practice mindful listening and breathing.
Creating an outdoor community for open-ended daily play.
Using one of Park School’s maker spaces to make meaningful creations to help bring mindfulness into our everyday lives.
Daily yoga class that will include fun-filled yoga exercises and games promoting team building, inner strength, and body awareness.

Mindfulness and Yoga Camp is run by yoga instructor and Park parent Christine Burchett. Open to children entering Grades 1-3.

nxt robotics: beginner session
AGES: 10-15
DATES: July 8-JULY 19
PRICE: $900 PER 2-WEEK CAMP

Centered on LEGO’s NXT robots platform, this session introduces beginners to robot design and programming. Participants will build multiple NXT robots, integrate sensors, and learn icon-driven programming that incorporates math, science, and computer coding. Small student teams will have their robots dancing, reading environmental cues, and navigating obstacle courses by the session’s end. Design thinking leads participants to understand, break down, and solve engineering problems with tenacity and imagination. Individual computers and NXT robot kits are provided.

Breaks for lunch and free swim are included each day along with time to explore Park School’s beautiful 100-acre campus and experience the Appalachian Challenge Course.

STEM POKÉMoN: Playing the game
AGES: 8-11
DATES: JULY 15-july 19
PRICE: $450 PER 1-WEEK CAMP

Discover the amazing world and strategies of Pokémon the Card Game. In this 1-week camp, children take their love of Pokémon beyond trading cards at school and filling binders. They learn the skills to sit down with their friends, play confidently, and enjoy hours of fun while practicing math, and learning about probabilities and planning.

Campers begin each morning with a clinic session, followed by practice building decks and then structured play. In the afternoon, a new mechanic is introduced and followed by open-play. The week concludes with a massive tournament.

Skills covered introduce the role of basic and evolved Pokémons, Energy, and Trainer cards, weakness, resistance and attack values, active and retreat options and steps, evolution, the interaction of energy color characteristics, and more! Whether campers favor Pikachu or Mega Blastroice, this camp will teach real skills to build strong decks, defend your Pokémon, and play effectively.

Breaks for lunch and free swim are included each day along with time to explore Park School’s beautiful 100-acre campus and experience the Appalachian Challenge Course.

nature and creative writing
AGES: 9-13
DATES: JULY 22-AUGUST 2
PRICE: $900 PER 2-WEEK CAMP

Do you love to go outdoors and spend time in nature? Do you also love to express yourself in creative writing? This camp will combine the best of both in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

Each day, we will enjoy a creativity-sparking game or two to get our creative energy flowing. We will also explore the beautiful, wooded 100-acre campus by walking the trails, enjoying the stream, and learning what we observe. We will bring the ideas, experiences, and materials of our outdoor living into our writing. We will grow as writers by exploring techniques to improve every aspect of the writing process, including seeking inspiration for writing, trying exciting and fresh ways to plan a draft, and developing our own true writing voice. We will enjoy excerpts from both favorite and new-to-us writers of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction before trying our own, self-designed writing projects. Each camper will have one-on-one conferences with a writing educator, as well as constructive input from fellow campers in a workshop setting.

Breaks for lunch and free swim are included each day along with time to experience the Appalachian Challenge Course.

stem legos: tricky builds and engineering
AGES: 6-9
DATES: JULY 29-AUGUST 2
PRICE: $450 PER 1-WEEK CAMP

For one week this summer, young campers will “free-build” projects according to goals rather than following printed directions. Lessons in reverse engineering build sequential skills over the week, and these skills lead to more challenging projects and more creative solutions. If your child loves Legos and wants to combine their passion with new skills, creative thinking, and design thinking — and a lot of fun — then this is the perfect camp! (All materials provided.)

Sample challenges include…

  • Pattern blocking with shadows
  • Wind Racers
  • Fidget spinners
  • Hydrology and dams
  • Marble Runs
  • Balloon cars
  • Gravity Derby
  • Physical science, volume, and displacement
  • Drawing Robot
  • Fun build challenge cards

Campers begin each morning with a clinic session to learn two new skills, followed by a simple practice build in teams. From there, a larger challenge is posed and creativity and persistence come into play under counselor guidance. In the afternoon, a new build is introduced and campers share their ideas and build together again in teams.

Breaks for lunch and free swim are included each day along with time to explore Park School’s beautiful 100-acre campus and experience the Appalachian Challenge Course.
