School Bus Mechanic/Bus Driver

THE POSITION

Maintain the Park School buses, support vehicles and various maintenance equipment to assure safe, effective and efficient operation in support of the educational, athletic, and event programs, and assist with transportation of students. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct inspections of equipment for safety status and to identify potential equipment malfunction.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on all school vehicles as required by State statute, safety policies, and procedures.
  • Operate gas and arc welding equipment to repair cracks in body components and frames and perform body and fender work, including spray-painting exterior and interior finishes.
  • Diagnose and manage major repairs and improvements of vehicles, including but not limited to, diesel engines, injectors, pumps, automatic transmission repair and replacement, air brake systems and electrical systems.
  • Road test repaired vehicles to ensure proper and safe function.
  • Maintain vehicle repair records including the nature of the repair, labor hours, and parts used in making repairs.
  • Manage parts and equipment orders and maintain an inventory of vehicle supplies and equipment.
  • Promote high standards in safety and housekeeping methods in work-connected areas.
  • Perform small engine maintenance and PM’s on other school equipment as required.
  • Drive established school bus routes, school field trips, and athletic trips.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of automotive trade practices, tools, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of construction and operation of automotive electrical systems and internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary precautions required to work around, in and under vehicles or to work with petroleum-based chemicals, solvents and exhaust fumes.
  • Ability to locate and repair defects in automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to use tools and operate diagnostic and power equipment employed in the repair and adjustment of engines and components.
  • Ability to perform diagnostic and mechanical repair work without direct supervision in the shop or in the field.
  • Ability to use welding and other shop equipment such as lathes and grinders.
  • Ability to change and repair tires.                                                                                          
  • Ability to work independently.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma and experience working with truck maintenance and repair. Ability to read and understand documents such as safety rules and operating and maintenance instructions and manuals.  Ability to write routine reports.

CERTIFICATES and/or LICENSES

Possess and maintain an appropriate valid Maryland Class C Commercial Driver's License with P & S endorsements issued by the State of Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles.  Have an acceptable driving record, and current auto insurance coverage. Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position as determined by a physician.

WORK HOURS AND DAYS

  • Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (may be adjusted as needed)
  • Drive an A.M. or P.M. school bus route and at other times as needed
  • Occasional evenings and weekends for special events
  • On-call rotation on a regularly assigned basis; responding to after-hour alarm calls when necessary

The employee must regularly lift and/or move 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
