Lower School Counselor

The Park School is a non-sectarian, independent, coeducational day school of 814 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Founded in 1912 as one of the early progressive schools, The Park School continues to practice a distinct educational philosophy. The core values today, as in 1912, are a belief in children’s capacity to love learning, to grow academically and emotionally when inspired by highly qualified, caring teachers, and to develop self-discipline, confidence, and creative problem-solving skills through deep exploration and constant challenge. At every grade level, from Pre-Kindergarten through Upper School, Park actively encourages questioning and conversation as essential elements of the learning process. The school philosophy emphasizes a belief in positive expectations and expects that students, as they mature, will take increasing responsibility for their own learning.

The Position

The Park School of Baltimore seeks candidates for a full time Lower School Counselor beginning in the Fall 2020. An orientation compatible with Park’s commitment to progressive educational practices is essential.

The primary role of the school counselor is to support students in their social and emotional development. This happens through a variety of ongoing prevention programming efforts. When students are struggling, the school counselor’s responsibility is to provide counseling support through informal assessment, short term individual and group counseling, case coordination and crisis intervention. As part of a three-clinician schoolwide team, the school counselors consult and collaborate regularly with parents, faculty, administration and external support providers to best meet the needs of the students in the school setting.

Park’s Lower School is committed to progressive principles of education. Respect for children and confidence in their natural capacity to learn-and to enjoy learning- are key. The program at all grade levels centers on experiential learning within an integrated curriculum. Our approach emphasizes open-ended inquiry and problem solving, collaborative projects, and exposure to a wide range of learning activities and materials, anchored by a focus on essential understandings and attention to basic skills.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide short term individual and small group counseling in response to identified social, emotional and mental health needs of students.
  • Develop and implement prevention education programming for the lower school community.
  • Work with the school on crisis intervention and management.
  • Develop and teach social emotional learning curriculum in the Lower School.
  • Work with families in addressing school related social, emotional and mental health concerns. Refer families, as needed, to appropriate community support providers.
  • Serve as ongoing liaison between students, faculty, parents and outside professionals regarding social/emotional issues that may impact school performance.
  • Develop and facilitate parent education programs related to child development and social emotional well-being.
  • Work in concert with members of the school-wide health team (includes school counselors, school nurse and human sexuality teacher), division principals, faculty, learning resource teachers, and the head of school. 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in social work, school counseling or related field.
  • Experience working with elementary-age children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with different constituencies.
  • Ability to build strong rapport with students, families, school personnel and external support providers.
  • Ability to create, develop and teach social emotional curriculum responsive to current needs in child development.
  • Knowledge of current research related to early childhood social emotional development and mental health.
  • Ability to collect, review, and analyze data, in order to improve support services.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-start and work autonomously, as well as part of a team.
  • Willingness to develop one's own knowledge and skills through professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, visible, resilient, collaborative, and approachable.
  • Adherence to ethical standards and best practices of state and national school counselor associations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of local policies and state and federal laws pertaining to school counseling.
  • Skill and comfort in using multiple web-based platforms for record keeping and communication.

Faculty & Curricular Advancement (FACA) Program

A $5.6 million endowed program, established in 1989, supports summer professional development work by faculty. This program provides full salary and benefits for work on group or individual projects. Approximately 40% of Park faculty participate in FACA projects each summer. Projects are selected through a formal, competitive review process.

Tuition Remission

Under current policy, faculty who have been employed at Park full-time for two years are eligible to receive full tuition remission for their children who attend Park. (Faculty children must meet the same standards for admission as all other applicants.) During the first two years of employment, faculty may apply for financial assistance through Park’s need-based Tuition Assistance program.
